Summer Walking Nights: What do you think?

In addition to doing a Block Party this Summer, what do you think of the following?

The Idea: I propose that we have one night per month in the Summer (June, July, & August), maybe a Tuesday, to have a neighborhood walk between the hours of 7:00-8:30pm. So throughout the neighborhood, famililes and individuals would be out together and walk, jog, ride a bike, pull your kids in a wagon, etc... The purpose would be to further develop a strong sense of community within Cordova Towne, interact with neighbors, and have a safe and fun family-oriented night, all while getting exercise. Residents will be encouraged to talk with others, meet people on the walk, bring kids, say hello, and just find good creative ways to have fun.

$100 Gift Card?: We would set up five tables with water bottles spread throughout the neighborhood (as pictured below by white dots, locations of tables could really be anywhere). At each table you will get a stamp from that particular table. After collecting a stamp from each table, thus showing that you participated and went throughout the neighborhood, you willl be entered into a drawing to win a $100 Raleys gift card (or maybe Home Depot). We will choose a location to do the drawing at 8:30pm on that night.

The diagram below shows potential spots on the grid for table sites. All in all, in light of where the tables would be located, the typical total mileage for a resident to go through the entire route would only be 1.25-1.50 miles, which ought to be doable for most folks. Each table would be governed by a volunteer.

What do you think?

Does this sound like a good idea? Would you do this with your family? Do you think your neighbors would be into something like this? Let me know by calling, emailing, or commenting below. And if this is a go, then we will gather some volunteers throughout the neighborhood to pull this off. As far as funding the event, since it would likely cost somewhere around $500-$600 for the 3 nights (gift cards, water bottles, flyers, marketing), I am working on that end right now and in dialogue with the City about some options. Obviously having gift cards and such depends highly on whether funding will be secured, but I am optimistic that it will work out fairly easily.

Great idea Ryan! However, Tuesdays are not good for me, but husband could participate.

Look forward to hearing more!

We could always shoot for a Wednesday. I think staying earlier in the week will be better since sometimes people get tired by the end of the week, you know.
